With a bumper Cotton crop expected during the 2017-18 season (October-September), the Indian Cotton Federation (ICF) has urged the union government to direct the state-run CCI (Cotton Corporation of India) to procure 100 lakh bales (a bale is 170 kgs).

While a record crop of 400 lakh bales is estimated for the 2017-18 season making India the biggest producer of Cotton for the third consecutive season, mill consumption will be around 300-310 lakh bales, ICF noted.

Cotton sowing has reached a record high of 122.6 lakh hectares in the country during the just concluded kharif season on the back of good rainfall in key growing regions.

According to lnternational Cotton Advisory Committee's (ICAC's) latest report, a similar situation is expected in other Cotton growing countries, resulting in 75% surplus cotton globally for 2017-18.

India drags feet on GM mustard permit amid powerful opposition

India has frozen requests to commercially release a locally developed genetically modified mustard, an environment ministry document released on Tuesday showed, amid stiff opposition to lab-altered food from domestic activists and politicians.

The mustard variety would have been the first transgenic food crop to be allowed for commercial cultivation. But the environment ministry's Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) has deferred approval despite a panel the ministry supervises giving the genetically modified (GM) mustard technical clearance last year.

"Subsequent to receipt of various representations from different stakeholders, matters related to environmental release of transgenic mustard are kept pending for further review," the GEAC said in minutes of a meeting released on the environment ministry's website marked "confidential and restricted circulation".

Cotton is the only GM crop currently allowed to be sold in the world's second most populous country where arable land is shrinking. U.S. company Monsanto Co dominates the cotton seed market in India, and often faces resistance from local companies over its position.

India's wheat planting likely to surpass last year's planting

India's wheat planting is expected to surpass last year's 31 million hectares on the back of better water availability and soil moisture.

According to officials, wheat planting has begun in irrigated parts of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat and will pick up in other regions, including Punjab and Haryana, in the coming days.

India, the world's second-largest producer of wheat, recorded a bumper crop of 98.38 million tonnes last year. For 2017-18, the government has set a target of 97.50 million tonnes.

Last season, wheat planting topped the previous year's 31.55 million hectares by 8%. Higher acreage supported by good prices would increase farmers' income and lower the country's dependence on imports.

According to trade figures, the country has already imported 1 million tonnes of the commodity this year. As on October 1, the government's wheat stock stood at about 25.3 million tonnes.

Palm oil demand strong as top buyers China, India restock inventories

Palm oil demand is expected to remain robust for the rest of the month as key consumer countries India and China rebuild low stock levels, bucking a seasonal trend in which shipments of the tropical oil typically taper off at year-end.

A narrow discount to a rival edible oil, however, could limit demand growth moving forward, say traders and analysts, since buyers usually switch to more favoured soyoil when its price premium over palm narrows.

The price differential or the spread between palm oil on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade soyoil has been hovering between $80 and $90 a tonne, soyoil's narrowest premium over palm since February.

"For October we're looking at a 10 to 13 percent gain in exports, mainly from China and India, though India demand may slow compared to the previous month," said David Ng, a derivatives specialist at Phillip Futures in Kuala Lumpur.

http://tradenivesh.com/services/mcx--nivesh.php

India and China are the world's top two buyers of palm oil, and command a substantial share of global demand. Palm oil import demand from China and India, which celebrate the Mid-Autumn and Diwali festivals respectively this month, had already gained in September as buyers stocked up ahead of the events.

India`s coffee output seen rising 12.3 percent on higher acreage: Board

India's coffee output is likely to rise 12.3 percent from a year ago to 350,400 tonnes in 2017/18 due to an expansion in the area under cultivation, the state-run Coffee Board said on Tuesday.

The South Asian country, which is famous as a tea producer, is also the world's No.6 coffee grower, mainly churning out the robusta beans used to make instant coffee, but also producing some of the more expensive arabica variety.

The country's robusta production is likely to rise 14 percent to 247,300 tonnes in the marketing year that started on Oct. 1, while arabica output could rise 8.5 percent to 103,100 tonnes, the board said.

India, which some say started coffee cultivation in 1670 with seven smuggled beans, exports three-quarters of its production.

Oil demand may exceed supply by up to 4 million bpd by 2019: Trafigura

SINGAPORE  - Global oil demand may be between 2 million to 4 million barrels per day (bpd) more than worldwide crude supply by the end of 2019 as exploration spending has declined as prices fell, an executive with commodities trading house Trafigura said on Tuesday.

The mismatch in supply and demand is the result of a decline in spending to find new oil and gas reserves and as existing wells, especially new wells from shale formations, are naturally used up, said Ben Luckock, Trafigura’s co-head of group market risk, at an industry conference in Singapore.

Benchmark Brent crude oil prices collapsed to as low as $27.10 a barrel in January 2016 from as much as $115.71 in June 2014. Prices have rebounded since then to over $59. The steep decline in revenue as prices dropped caused companies to cut their exploration budgets.

Luckock pointed to a drop in exploration spending in 2016 to about $300 billion from $700 billion two years earlier as a reason supply will eventually fall below demand.

Gold, silver decline in morning session

Gold prices were trading in red during the morning trade on Tuesday on the account of weak trend overseas and subdued demand from local jewellers.

MCX Gold was down 0.31%, or Rs 94, at Rs 29,839 per 10 gram around 1035 hours, whereas MCX Silver was down 0.33%, or Rs 134, at Rs 41,030 per 1 kg.

The market participants expect that gold to trade sideways on Tuesday due to profit booking after the recent rally. While stronger dollar index and less damage by Hurricane IRMA are factors pushing down the gold prices.

Latest holdings of SPDR Gold Trust, the world’s largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, declined 0.3% to 834.50 tonnes till September 8. Holdings of the largest silver-backed exchange-traded-fund (ETF), New York's iShares Silver Trust SLV, stood at 10,173.58 tonnes, remain unchanged from the previous business day.

Crude Oil prices to trade lower

WTI oil prices declined by 0.3 percent yesterday to close at D46.4 per barrel as Reuters estimated that at least 3.65 million barrels per day (bpd) of refining capacity was offline or 19.6 percent of total U.S. capacity after Motiva  shuttered the largest U.S. refinery. Tropical Storm Harvey knocked out several refineries and disrupted fuel production, while a backup in crude supplies pushed U.S. crude oil futures down more than 2.5 percent.

Brent crude, the international benchmark for crude trading, was down 30 cents at $51.70 a barrel by 0825 GMT. U.S. crude fell 25 cents to $46.19.

U.S. crude inventories fell by 5.78 million barrels last week, the API industry group reported on Tuesday, suggesting a gradual tightening of the U.S. oil market. The figures, however, do not reflect the impact from Harvey.

Gold soars to nine-and-half months high

Gold price maintained gaining streak for the third consecutive trading day to reach its highest price since November 2016 as geopolitical tensions escalated due to a new North Korean missile launch.

Spot gold rose 0.6% to USD 1,316.90 per ounce as of 0314 GMT, after earlier touching its highest since November 9 at USD 1,322.33. Gold gained 1.4% in the previous session in its biggest one-day percentage rise since mid-May.

US gold futures for December delivery were up 0.6% to USD 1,322.80 per ounce.

South Korea and Japan said the missile North Korea launched early on Tuesday landed in Pacific waters east of Hokkaido after flying over the northern Japanese island, in a sharp escalation of tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Geopolitical tensions can boost demand for safe-haven assets such as gold which is considered a good store of value during volatility in other markets.
